A case of normal word reading but impaired letter naming
نویسندگان
چکیده
A case of a word/letter dissociation is described. The present patient has a quasi-normal word reading performance (both at the level of speed and accuracy) while he has major problems in nonword and letter reading. More specifically, he has strong difficulties in retrieving letter names but preserved abilities in letter identification. This study complements previous cases reporting a similar word/letter dissociation by focusing more specifically on word reading and letter naming latencies. The results provide new constraints for modeling the role of letter knowledge within reading processes and during reading acquisition or rehabilitation. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A connectionist approach to word reading and acquired dyslexia: extension to sequential processing
A connectionist approach to word reading, based on the principles of distributed representation, graded learning of statistical structure, and interactivity in processing, has led to the development of explicit computational models which account for a wide range of data on normal skilled reading and on patterns of reading impairment due to brain damage. There have, however, been recent empirica...
متن کاملHow Priming Affects Two Speeded Implicit Tests of Remembering: Naming Colors versus Reading Words
Three experiments investigated two timed implicit tests of memory-word reading and color naming. Using the study-test procedure, Experiments 1 and 2 showed that studied words caused reliable facilitation in word reading but no interference in color naming relative to unstudied words. Indeed, there was a small amount of facilitation in color naming as well. Experiment 3 further explored the colo...
متن کاملMore than words: a common neural basis for reading and naming deficits in developmental dyslexia?
Dyslexic individuals show subtle impairments in naming pictures of objects in addition to their difficulties with reading. The present study investigated whether word reading and picture naming deficits in developmental dyslexia can be reduced to a common neurological impairment. Eight dyslexic subjects, impaired on measures of reading, spelling and naming speed, were matched for age and genera...

orthographic and phonological encoding of visual words were contrastedin a patient with letter-by-letter reading using a priming paradigm. Lower caseprimes displayed for 100 msec preceded upper case target words the subject hadto name. Primes were the same word as the target, homophones to the target, orunrelated words. Relative to unrelated primes, same-word primes resulted in ...
متن کاملMultimodal alexia: neuropsychological mechanisms and implications for treatment.
Letter-by-letter (LBL) reading is the phenomenon whereby individuals with acquired alexia decode words by sequential identification of component letters. In cases where letter recognition or letter naming is impaired, however, a LBL reading approach is obviated, resulting in a nearly complete inability to read, or global alexia. In some such cases, a treatment strategy wherein letter tracing is...
